THE FREEHAND SOCIETY
I wake early the next morning, slip out of bed and go to find myself a cup of coffee. Einstein is up and lost in the notebook and its calculations. Thereâs already a pot on the sideboard, so I pour myself a cup and join him at the table near the window.
âMay I?â I gesture to an empty chair, pulling him from his work.
âGood morning, Ms. Holiday. Of course,â he replies. âDid you have a good nightâs rest?â
âI did. Itâs so peaceful here. Not at all like where we come from. How about you?â
âYah, I did, very good indeed, and then this morning I was up at first light. I couldnât wait to get back into these equations.â He turns his attention back to the notebook for a brief moment before continuing. âI remembered this morning that we got interrupted yesterday, when you were telling us about how you found this.â
âThatâs right, we did.â I take a sip of my coffee. âWell, letâs see, where did I leave off?â
âSomething about a marble tile,â he answers.
âOh yes, well, like I said, there was a marble tile. It must have been loose because when I fell into the bench, I heard a sound and looked down to see the notebook lying there.â
âI see. So it just fell out from behind the tile?â
âYes, I mean, I think soâ¦and correct me if I am wrongâ¦but doesnât someone have to put it back there so I can find it in the future?â
Einstein pauses, takes his pipe and tobacco from his jacket pocket, opens the tobacco satchel and dips the pipe in, filling the bowl. âYes, I believe you are correct.â
âI mean, if I donât find it in the future, then none of this happens, right?â
âTheoreticallyâ¦â He gently tamps down the tobacco with his finger and then reaches into the bag and plucks another bit, adding it to the pipe. âWhat was the name of the hotel?â he asks.
âThe Freehand,â I reply.
I hadnât noticed Hale come into the room. Heâs retrieving a book from his collection when he overhears our conversation and chimes in.
âThe Freehand?â
âYes, thatâs right,â I say.
He looks to Einstein and Einstein to him and then Einstein chuckles. âVery interesting. You know, Hale, Bohr and I belong to a secret group that have been working on time travel for the last nine years. Guess what we call ourselves?â
âI have no idea,â I answer.
He lights his pipe. âThe Freehand Society!â
âI donât believe it! Thatâs incredible, but why the Freehand Society?â
Hale finds the book he is looking for and pulls it from the self. âMostly because we have had nothing but our minds to guide us on our quest for time travel. Much like an artist draws without anything to guide their hand, weâve had no mechanical devicesâ¦nothing to test out our equations or our theories. Well, that is until recently when Van De Graaf finished his collider.â
âThatâs right,â Einstein interrupts. âThank God for Heir Van De Graaf and his machine.â
âIâm curiousâ¦â Hale continues.
